Back in Cirencester in time for my 50th birthday! This break from my treatment is only for a few days. There's still more chemotherapy to come.

Beautifully sunny and warm day with a Small Tortoiseshell on Salvia at the front and in the back garden, a Comma butterfly on Verbena bonariensis.

I think that this Comma butterfly is quite hard to see in this photograph - note how the colour of the underside of the wings is like the colour of the dead flowerhead.

Welcome home again Linda, and happy birthday too! I was delighted to see a tortoishell feeding on the echinacea purpurea by my kitchen door, brave little thing, clinging to the flower even though it was a windy day, he came back the next day as well, do you think he will hibernate and overwinter somewhere? I must find out what are their caterpillar food plants, and grow some. I am trying to provide these, have a large patch of nettles for the red admirals, and grow lots of wild flowers. Best wishes to you and your family.

Small Tortoiseshell, Peacock and Comma butterflies lay their eggs on nettles along with the Red Admirals.

These are also the species that hibernate as an adult (butterfly) over the Winter months. They will be looking for suitable habitat now - a dry shed or unheated garage for example. They do not want to be in a centrally-heated house which may well get too warm over the coming months and bring them out of hibernation early.
